Gareth Lewis joined HIROC in 2003 and became Vice President of Claims in 2020. He is responsible for the daily operation of the department. Further to his managerial/directorial duties, Gareth also has a full file pending comprised mainly of large-loss medical malpractice and general liability claims, including class actions and cyber-liability matters. Additionally, since joining in 2003, Gareth has overseen the management of the New Brunswick Healthcare Services Liability Protection Plan (NB HSLPP), where HIROC provides claims handling, risk management, coverage assistance, and actuarial services to the province. In handling claims and incidents from New Brunswick, he has successfully dealt with all queries and matters reported in both official languages. Prior to working at HIROC, Gareth has worked in both the insurance brokerage and healthcare industries.
Gareth holds an Honours Bachelor of Science in Biology with Administrative Option from Wilfrid Laurier University and he holds both the CIP and the FCIP designations from the Insurance Institute of Canada. In 2010, Gareth completed the Certificate in Health Law program from Osgoode Hall Law School. In 2012, Gareth received the Canadian Risk Management (CRM) designation from the Global Risk Management Institute. That year, he was also awarded the Fred Bossons Award, recognizing the CRM graduate with the highest overall grade point average from the three courses in Canada. In 2017, Gareth received his MBA from Queen’s University.
